We all baby proof our homes so why not substance proof our homes? The research shows that most youth get drugs from their own homes, the homes of family members, or the homes of friends. There are simple things that we can do to protect our youth. The research indicates that young males from 18 to 35 are most affected by the opioid crisis followed by women aged 50+.
Lock up your medications.
Drugs that are misused include not only opioids but many over the counter drugs. Find a secure way to lock up your medications. If you no longer need the medications, dispose of them properly (not in the toilet). 24/7 drug disposal is free and confidential at the Newnan Police Department and Coweta Fire Department (addresses or links?). If you must keep prescriptions in the home, lock them up. Options include a lock box, a cabinet with a lock, a suitcase with a lock, a safe, a locked room.
Talk to your kids.
Make sure all the adults know what the risks are and what messages you want to give your children.
Talk to relatives
Make sure your relatives (especially grandparents) know the dangers of having drugs in the open and that they can secure their medications so that visitors cannot access them
